Auto Repair - Brake Repair Inspection - Brake Repair Services

There are two ways to check for brake wear on disc brakes - visual observation - and listening for symptoms.

Looking to determine Brake Repair Requirements: Check for wear by looking at your brake pads through the spaces between the wheel’s spokes. The outside pad will be pressed against the metal rotor. There should be at least 1/4 inch of pad visible. If you see less than that you may want to have your brake pads inspected here as they probably are in of replacing.

The sounds of Brake problem: Usually as brake pads wear thin you will begin to hear a high-pitched screeching sound when you applied your brakes? That's a small metal shim, called an indicator, which is giving you an audible warning that you need to replace your brake pads. Be mindful that you may not hear this sound while the windows are up, with the A/C and radio on. From time to time roll down your window with radio off while backing up or driving down a side street. If your car has been sitting after being exposed to water, such as from rain or from washing it. The moisture can cause a thin layer of rust to develop that may cause a squeals but will cease after several stops.

Other Symptoms of Brake problems: Reduced responsiveness when stopping or pulsating when applied. If your brake pedal “sinks” low toward the floor, this could be an indication of a low brake fluid. Pulling when brake is applied; if your vehicle “pulls” to one side or the other while braking, it may be a sign that the brake linings are wearing unevenly or that there is foreign matter in the brake fluid.

Serious Brake Problems: The sound of loud metal grinding means that you have worn down the pads completely, most likely beyond replacement. This requires rotors to be cut/lathed or for new rotors if the damage is too deep. Avoid this serious expense by checking your brakes regularly and being mindful of the symptoms outlined above.
